A limited run of 240 units was produced. From the Stern website in advance of production:The Limited Edition model will be offered in two series of 120 games each. Each game in the first series will be named for one of the 120 episodes of the television show. Each game in the second series will be named for one of the iconic "bat gadgets" used in the series. In total, only 240 Limited Edition machines will be produced.
All purchasers who make a deposit on their game will also receive a VIP invitation to an exclusive "meet and greet" with Batman (Adam West) at the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel in Wheeling, Illinois during the weekend of Chicago’s Pinball Expo [2016].
Each game came with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Gary Stern. Each playfield was signed by designer George Gomez under the hard coat finish.

The Super Limited Edition model was initially advertised as a limited quantity of 30 units but subsequently was changed to 80 units. No advertising flyer was necessary. From the Stern website in advance of production:In celebration of Stern Pinball’s 30th anniversary and Batman’s 50th anniversary, Stern Pinball will build a Super Limited Edition model. The Super Limited Edition model also includes a one-of-kind art package plus multiple translites, a unique included topper and accessories package, and a high-fidelity 3-channel audio system that is three times more powerful than audio systems of previous generations. The Super Limited Edition model will be allocated by invitation and through an application process open to pinball collectors. Collectors can apply for a Super Limited Edition model by completing and submitting an application. Applications are due by 11:59 pm CST on September 30, 2016.

| Notes: | This is a lower-priced version of Stern's 2008 'Batman' with fewer playfield toys and with different software, and designer George Gomez states it is a completely different game to play. Reportedly, 48 of these games have been built as a marketing trial for sale in selected Costco Warehouse retailers. If successful, then more will be made, but with further cost-saving attributes. For instance, the cabinet may not be as thick as these first 48, which have the standard commercial-strength cabinet.
Gary Stern, Chairman and CEO of Stern Pinball, Inc., refers to this cost-cutting version as the 'Standard' model, while the original version is the 'Pro' model. |

The Manual in our Files section shows on page 130 the Playfield Power Board (PPB) version 520-5021-00. Reportedly, Sega used PPB version 520-5021-05 on this game and on all games from Jurassic Park and later. |

This game uses the larger 192x64 pixel DMD.
This game features Edgar Winter's classic song "Frankenstein" as one of the theme songs.
Although 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' is a 4-player game, it played a role in the development of the 6-player feature used on subsequent Sega games. Programmer Orin Day tells us about the use of 6-players in Sega games: The 6-player display code was prototyped as a "proof-in-concept" on the Frankenstein display, but was first released in Baywatch. The Frankenstein multiball start display effect was repurposed in attract mode to promote this 6-player feature. Baywatch and Batman Forever also had this feature. When we switched back to the 128x32 display for Apollo 13 and subsequent games we also switched to the Whitestar hardware system. It's my recollection that at that time we coded both the game and display to take six players. It was removed from the system at the time of Sharkey's Shootout, no games after that had it (with the exception of NFL, which was a derivative of Striker, and any games from earlier in the catalog like South Park which were remanufactured). |

This game was planned to be a 'Batman' license...the police car was to be the Batmobile and the Jail was to be the Bat Cave. Designer Mark Ritchie stated that the art has to be changed at the last minute because Data East, a competitor, already had the license for Data East's 1991 'Batman'.
The yellow limousine taxi in the backglass appeared previously on designer Mark Ritchie's game Williams' 1988 'Taxi'.
In the Files section are four large zipfiles of pictures of an Engineering Test Game, possibly MEL, having serial number 573 X270006. Also included there is a PDF of a Q&A between the game owner and designer Mark Ritchie about this test game, referencing some of the images contained in the zipfiles.
