Notes: | So far, we have seen two examples of this re-themed game. It used to be Gottlieb's 1981 'Volcano' and Gottlieb's 1981 'Mars God of War'. In the three images that we saw of the converted Volcano (not shown here), the Gottlieb playfield art was retained as only the bumper caps and plastic light shields were changed, all having bright orange as their primary color. Three decals were added to the Gottlieb cardholder which still had in it the Volcano instruction card and score card. The cabinet has been repainted. In the three images that we saw of the converted Mars God of War (not shown here), the Gottlieb playfield art was retained as only the bumper caps and plastic light shields were changed, all having red as their primary color. Two decals were added to the Gottlieb cardholder which still had in it the Mars God of War instruction card and score card. The cabinet has been repainted. For both games, the lower backglass indicated "Actros Magic Tour 2013" and showed the front ends of three heavy-duty trucks. The pictures suggested there are an inner and outer backglass. From information we found online, it appears Mercedes-Benz holds a touring roadshow annually to present their Actros trucks to drivers and haulers. We found online a small image of an advertising poster for the 2013 roadshow and it shows art elements similar to the backglass on this re-themed game, but only one truck. The 2013 tour was advertised to visit five locations in France beginning in March of that year. We don't know who re-themed these games in celebration of that roadshow or what year they were done.

Notes: | This game is a conversion kit of Gottlieb's 1980 'Panthera'. According to a translation given us for the manufacturer's color flyer, this kit contained: • Playfield with game rules and score sheets. • Specific ball for the captive ball feature. • Game memory exclusive to Le Grand 8. • Grand 8 sound board. • Safety glass backglass respecting the Gottlieb thickness. • Backbox inside panel with bulbs, wiring, score displays and logical cards. • Set of cabinet decorations that fits all 80 models. Some examples of this game had the Gottlieb backbox with the "infinity lighting" while others had a conventional backbox without this lighting. Claude Verpy, a collector in France and a good friend of the manufacturer, passed along this information: Christian Tabart told me that Le Grand 8 was based on Panthera and 100 machines were produced. Christian had the kits made and delivered to his workshops in Montgeron, France. Opera If someone brought a Mars God of War or Volcano to convert, the back Shown in this listing are two stickers which Tabart affixed to the aprons of the machines he operated in bars to identify himself as the owner and to advertise his company. Agnès Dusaugey did the artwork for the backglass and playfield. In our Files section is a letter from her describing how she got involved in the making of this game.

Notes: | First Gottlieb game with speech, generated by a Votrax SC-01. The spaceships depicted on the game's playfield, playfield plastics, and backglass are remarkably similar to a preliminary production artwork drawing of a snowspeeder for The Empire Strikes Back film, drawn by Star Wars concept artist, Joe Johnston, in February 1978. An image of the drawing was published in the book "The Empire Strikes Back Sketchbook", released in June 1980, which was shortly after the movie's release in May 1980.
