Notes: | Production stopped short to begin "Pinball 2000" production. Pictured in this listing is a numbered Special Collectors Edition Plate made of cast aluminum. Tom Kopera told us that they had planned to have a production run of 925 so that was the quantity of plates that they had ordered to be made. The plates were supposed to be affixed to every game (first game made to have plate number 001, 50th game made to have number 050, etc.) but the plates were late in the making and 70% of the games were shipped out to distributors before anybody realized the plates had not caught up with the games. Williams ended up giving the plates to distributors to mat A hobbyist reports that there is a test mode for Saloon Doors on his production game, a playfield feature that was on prototype games but did not make it to production games.

Notes: | Fred Young did voice characterizations on this game. Joe Kaminkow told us that the previous game, Data East's 1990 'The Simpsons', was to be their first game to have DMD. However, President and CEO Joe Keenan worried that development of the DMD might not be ready in time for that game and problems occurring had they rushed it into production could put the company out of business. The playfield layout for Checkpoint was based on the layout of Data East's 1989 'Robocop' which Joe said did not sell very well but they liked the basic design, modifying it for this game. Pictured in this listing is a test game playfield and two test game white cabinets, images captured from a video taken during the November 1990 factory tour of Data East. The playfield has a few differences from the production version. Joe told us their backboxes had DMD (not the alpha-numeric as seen on the prototype backglass pictured here) and that they decided that these white cabinets showed dirt and location grime too easily, including around the flipper buttons, such that the cabinet art was changed for production games. This game was produced from February 1991 to May 1991.

Design by: | Ed Krynski | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Notes: | The schematic diagram refers to the knocker on this game as a "clapper". It indicates one bell is in the backbox and one bell is in the lower cabinet. We previously showed a date of November 1963 for this game. However, the earliest Billboard ad we found was dated Dec-28-1963 page 34, where the manufacturer placed a small notice, advertising the game as "All New", advising customers to contact them or a distributor. In Cash Box dated Dec-28-1963 page 18, Keeney announced this game as available at distributors. Keeney also announced the game in a large Billboard ad in Jan-4-1964 page 30, shown in this listing. Billboard resale ads dated in 1966 give it a date of 12/63. Keeney was a prolific manufacturer of electronic upright gambling machines for both domestic and export locations. They distributed Colorama to Europe through their distribution network there, and Cash Box magazine reports that by February 1964 this game was selling well in the USA, Europe, and Tokyo, and in that same month Keeney entered the German market with this game. In March, they were rushing "substantial shipments" to distributors in Europe through their new partner, Loewen Automaten, after a "power sales campaign" there. We note that the Eastland Bill had outlawed interstate transportation of gambling devices effective December 1962 and that Keeney initiated production of three flipper pinball machines in 1963, after not having made one since 1959. Keeney kept advertising this game as "All New" in Cash Box up through August 29, 1964, the last ad from Keeney that we could find for Colorama. This long production run, starting December 1963, supports the success they had reported. The game continued to appear on the Cash Box list of "Manuf Keeney had apparently continued to produce this game even through their August 1 move to a new manufacturing plant in the old O.D. Jennings building at 4309 West Lake Street. We previously indicated that 'Colorama' was the last pin game from this manufacturer. However, that distinction belongs to Keeney's 1964 'Arrowhead' which was first advertised by distributors in both Billboard and Cash Box on the very same day that Keeney ceased advertising Colorama (August 29, 1964) and is the same day that Keeney showed its first and only listing for Arrowhead, and referred to it as "All New". Keeney provided no further advertising support for Arrowhead that we can find and it remains an obscure game. We cannot know how long that production run lasted. With the apparent production longevity of Colorama, perhaps Arrowhead was quietly quashed. We speculate that, while Arrowhead was clearly the last Keeney game to begin production, the long Colorama production run possibly made Colorama be the last pinball games out the door.

Notes: | The 1-player version of this game is Williams' 1971 'Klondike'. Also produced as a 4-player Williams' 1971 'Jackpot' made for export. A game owner reported to us that he has two examples of this game and both left the factory with the wiring incorrect on the right playfield score reel as compared to the schematic. Two wires were crossed on this right reel which caused incorrect scoring on some score reel combinations. We do not know how many other games left the factory with this wiring error. The promotional photos for Gold Rush and Jackpot are of the same machine but with a change of backglass and score card, and the playfield ball was moved to the other side of the up-post. Unlike production games, in these photos there are no posts in the gaps between the slingshots and the flippers. In the lower playfield, the Special insert is labeled to award 10000 points whereas production games are labeled for 5000 points. Even so, a report for Jackpot stated 5000 points is awarded even if the playfield indicates 10000. Notes: | Same game as the 4-player Williams' 1971 'Gold Rush' but made for export. The 1-player version of this game is Williams' 1971 'Klondike'. On the backglass, the yellow neckerchief has the letters "N C", a probable reference to Norm Clark. Reportedly, these initials are not as visible on other backglases in the production run. The promotional photos for Jackpot and Gold Rush are of the same machine but with a change of backglass and score card, and the playfield ball was moved to the other side of the up-post. Unlike production games, in these photos there are no posts in the gaps between the slingshots and the flippers. In the lower playfield, the Special insert is labeled to award 10000 points whereas production games are labeled for 5000 points. Pictured in this listing is a game located in Europe with serial number 94083 and with a Special insert labeled for 10000 points. The owner advised us this insert illuminates when a relay labeled "10,000 relay" is energized but it still only awards 5000 points when lit via five pulses from the score motor. We have labeled these game images as "Early Production". At some point in production, this relay was relabeled as the "Special Relay" as also indicated on the schematic. The schematic for this game indicates the presence of an electrically-operated large bell but the one picture we have of inside the cabinet does not have the bell in view along the back wall. The smaller bell in the backbox is mechanically operated and thus would not appear on the schematic. Notes: | Kingpin was the last game made by Capcom and only a few were made before Capcom closed their doors. Designer Mark Ritchie was working on this game before Flip Personnel were getting laid off at different points in time until all remaining people were terminated on December 9, 1996. The Demo Mo When a whitewood was approved for release to production, a sequentially-assigned project number was assigned to the game and engineering drawings were started. The Project Number for this game reportedly was "PB-4" and may appear in the artwork on the playfield under the cardholder. We are seeking your photo of this number under the cardholder. If it is not there, a photo of the entire area under the cardholder to show its absence is ideal.

Notes: | Dennis Nordman told us that he designed the cabinet, created the "force-field" idea, and built the molds for the tanks. Kevin O'Connor told us he did the complete art package for this game. 'Rapid Fire' was Bally's response to Williams' 1981 'Hyperball'. The pre-production working name of this game was 'Cross Fire' as evidenced in Bally's "Numerical List of Machines". At Chicago Expo 2009, former President of Williams Electronics Michael Stroll said that at the time of this game's making, Williams referred to it as "Operation Xerox". Jim Patla told us that the rush to get this game to market meant that it was produced in only 6 weeks (instead of a normal one year's time) but there were problems with the gun assembly. Patla estimated that it fired at 14 balls per second which in the course of steady use caused gun failure on location. He wanted a spare gun to be included in the cash box of each shipped game but management didn't agree, saying that that would be acknowledging that the game had troubles. Leftover cabinets from this production run were used in producing the following games: 'Mr. & Mrs. Pac-Man Pinball', May 1982 'Eight Ball Deluxe Limited Edition'', October 1982 'Centaur II', June 1983

Notable Features: | Flippers (2), Pop bumpers (3). The flat pop bumper caps look like soccer balls. No rear metal legs as it is a console cabinet in the back.
Notes: | We have seen only one photo of this Russian-made game (not shown here). The backglass depicts two soccer players of rival teams. There is no English on the backglass. The name of the glass appears to be удар!.. еще удар (udar yeshche udar) which roughly translates to shoot and shoot again. Two score displays of four nixie tubes each are on the left side of the backglass. One is labeled with what translates to Spartak (Spartan) while the other is labeled with what translates to Dinamo (Dynamo). We are told these are two rival sports clubs, very old and established across all sports, especially soccer and ice hockey. The base-yellow cabinet has brushed metal trim around the backbox and playfield, a protruding coin door, and front legs not mounted at the cabinet corners, all identical to Soyuzattraktsion's 'Sport (спорт)'.

Notes: | The alien depicted on the backglass was deemed an unlicensed use of the one used in the 1979 Hollywood movie Alien. Some playfield art elements and game sounds were borrowed from the 1978 'Space Invaders' video game which was still popular at the time that this pinball machine came out. Designer Jim Patla told us that his original drawing shows that all four flippers were to be the longer type. However, the upper two flippers were changed to the shorter type because longer flippers interfered with the lower flipper backhand shots. Three dimples on the playfield, representing flipper adjustment positions, can be seen at a distance from each end of the shorter flippers at a point where longer flippers would have met them.

Notes: | The original version of this game, Midway's 1992 'The Addams Family', broke previous sales records for any flipper pinball game. This Special Edition commemorates that event. Like the original, this edition has a flipper that not only is controlled by the player's flipper button but also is caused by the game programming to flip at certain points in game play. One earlier form of "auto-flipping" appears on Williams' 1953 'Palisades'. This edition has Gold accents, such as the metal ramps, gold legs and bolts, gold lettering, the vault plastic, the bumper caps and Thing's box. Each of the (only) 1000 "Gold" machines includes a certificate signed by the members of the design team and a gold plate, containing the machine number, on the lower right front of the machine. Machine #1 is property of Pat Lawlor himself. (see more information on Pat Lawlor and The Addams Family at http://www.patlawlordesign.com/playmeter.htm) We asked Pat if any playfields from the original 1992 run were used for this Special Edition. He replies: It's POSSIBLE that there were a few old playfields used for GOLD. But unlikely. Here's why. What many people will find unbelievable is that, at the end of the regular run of Addams Family, the remaining playfields that were not designated for parts sales were destroyed. Crushed in a large compactor. I personally saw racks of playfields go to the crusher. That's because Williams never ran second releases later. And that inventory would have had to have been stored somewhere in the building. It was more cost effective to write down the inventory than keep it. When the decision was made to do the Gold Run of 1000 games, new playfields were ordered and used. My game has a playfield made by Lenc-Smith [Manufacturing Company] in March of the build year. Impossible for the regular run! Now maybe a game was repaired with an old playfield from parts sales, but I do not believe that you could make a case that the entire run of Golds was old playfields. (My game proves that is incorrect). Larry DeMar points out that the Gold playfield is indeed different: The PMS values for several of the colors were changed to make them "hotter". Side by side, it is easy to tell apart playfields from the original run from the new run which used the same screens with different colors.

However, President and CEO Joe Keenan worried that development of the DMD might not be ready in time for this game and problems occurring had they rushed it into production could put the company out of business. Their next production game, Data East's 1991 'Checkpoint', introduced the DMD to pinball machines. We previously listed the Manufacture Date as October, 1990. This game was produced from September 1990 to February 1991.

Notes: | Needs to be kept clean as there are optical sensors on the outer sides of some plastic lanes, upper mini-playfield can be a bit hard to get off. Dennis Nordman said his 1952 Dodge panel truck is shown on the backglass and that Big Foot is based on his own countenance. Pictured in this listing is a "negative" image of the back This is is a film "continuous tone" negative of what was probably the "color comp" that John prepared before going to the final airbrushed painting. This is not yet a film separation - that would be the next step in the process (see below). We probably experimented with the rough color piece before getting too far into the project.

Notes: | Unlike other Bally electronic pinball games, their documentation for this game shows the model number only as 1196, not 1196-E. This is the first talking Bally game, using the AS-2518-56 sound board and the AS-2518-57 "Vocalizer" board instead of the "Squawk and Talk" system. Electronic music composer Suzanne Ciani composed the music and performed all of the voices for Xenon. You can learn more about Ciani's involvement in Xenon at her former official website, now archived, which has a lot of information about this game. Pinball art collector Harold Balde reports this information to accompany his image of an experimental playfield overlay: Bally experimented with printing the artwork on mylar then attaching it to the playfield as a cost savings measure. The artwork is not the same as the production Xenon - Paul Faris went back and airbrushed the art to make it look better for the 4-color process. At least one or two games were made with this overlay. Artist Paul Faris told us that he recalls there was a problem of applying those mylar overlays accurately after the boards had been routed and the inserts glued in.
