Manufacturer: Genco Manufacturing Company, of Chicago, Illinois, USA (1931-1958)

Type: Electro-mechanical (EM) [?]
Production: 7 units   (confirmed)

Theme: Ecdysiast Entertainment - Dancing - Women
Specialty: Flipperless [?]
Notable Features: Passive bumpers (8), Kick-out holes (4).
Notes: The playfield layout is nearly identical to that of Genco's 1947 'Honey'.

See also Genco's 1948 'Bubbles (Rolldown)' which would not have a ball shooter lane.

According to Genco data, seven sample games of this pinball machine were made on 04/17/47. We don't know why this game did not go into full production.

Production start date: 04/17/47
Production end date: 04/17/47

We previously showed a date for this game of January 1947.

We have seen two photographed examples of this game. One example is pictured here and has retro-fitted flippers. Careful inspection of its playfield identifies post removals (dark dots) in mid-playfield in the shadow area of the leg of each dancer. For each dancer, one post was near her toes and the other post was along the side wall, still in the shadow area. A rubber was stretch between each pair of posts. These posts were removed on this playfield to allow room for the retro-fitted flippers to flip the ball.

The example not shown here is flipperless and has those posts in place and with rubbers stretched between them. Its cabinet has artwork identical to that found on Triple Action, the first Genco game produced with factory-installed flippers in January 1948.

We are seeking photographs of this game. If anyone has seen pictures of it other than what we have, please contact us.

Notes: 'Congo' was produced both as a complete game and as a conversion kit for narrow body WPC Security games.

Designer John Trudeau said the gorilla in the lower-level playfield was sculpted by Stan Winston, the noted special effects and animation artist known for his work in television and motion pictures.

Included in this listing is a prototype game purchased from a former Williams employee who in turn purchased the game from the Williams' 3401 California facility where it was setup in the lunchroom as a test machine.

The current owner learned from Bill Grupp that its playfield is a prototype and the apron is one of only fifteen made.

Here are its differences from the production game:
1. The apron is a lighter green
2. The inserts leading to the left ramp are 3-2-1 instead of M-A-P.
3. The yellow arrow insert for the upper right saucer does not say 'Video'.
4. The yellow insert pointing up the volcano ramp only says 'Collect' instead of '3X Collect'
5. The scoops for the saucers are silver instead of black.
6. The insert closest to the lower saucer says 'See Map' instead of just 'Map' and is purple instead of green.
7. The 'Skill Fire' insert is green instead of purple.
8. Red circuit boards all underneath the playfield.

This test game is in a No Fear cabinet and still has the NF artwork on the backbox, but the lower cabinet is decaled with Congo. It has the WPC 95 boardset. It has the new style speaker grille but with the old style light board, not the shadow box style that the production games have. Also has production wire ramps, not black or unplated like some prototypes. Possibly these ramps, as well as the grille, were changed for the employee who bought it: Bill Grupp had indicated that employees who purchased such games tried to make their game as nice as possible before taking them home.

Manufacturer: Stern Electronics, Incorporated, of Chicago, Illinois,
USA
(1977-1984) [Trade Name: Stern]
Date Of Manufacture: 1982
MPU: Stern M-200 MPU
Type: Solid State Electronic (SS) [?]
Production: 6 units   (confirmed)
Serial Number Database:View at The Internet Pinball Serial Number Database (IPSND.net)  (External site)
Theme: Billiards
Notable Features: Flippers (2), Pop bumper (1), Passive bumpers (15), Spinning target (1), Electromagnet (1). A single digital score display serves all four players. A large magnet under the center playfield is always energized unless the ball rolls over its surface switch, momentarily disabling the magnet, causing the ball to fly off in an unpredictable direction. Only one outlane, and it is protected by the lone pop bumper at bottom of playfield. Reversed flippers catch the ball if it goes out a side lane. The ball will sit at the end of the flipper until the flipper button is pressed. The left flipper returns the ball to the very top of playfield. The right flipper sends the ball through the spinning target to the upper playfield area.

Design by: Harry Williams, Brian Poklacki
Mechanics by: Brian Poklacki
Notes: Brian Poklacki tells us that Harry Williams was technically retired at this time and living in Palm Springs, California but was still doing game designs for Gary Stern. He adds this:

For years I was the liaison between Stern and Harry Williams. Cue was a game that was conceived by Harry Williams. Harry's concept was to go back to a simpler design and less expensive game to try and keep pinball alive. This also never made it past the Prototype run. This is the last game he worked on before he passed.

Cindi Knox worked for Stern 1981-1983 and was involved with the on-site testing of this game. She provided the following information:

It was the first machine an operator asked us to take back. Original name was "Rotation". Only prototypes were built, although they had full graphics. One machine was dismantled in Stern's URL plant at 700 Chase in Elk Grove. Backglass and large magnet coil saved.

The owner of the game with images credited to Swain informs us that no manufacturer sticker or serial numbers were found anywhere on/in the game.

One inning per game. Hitting the Super Home Run can award 3,5, or 10 replays, depending on operator setting. Two carryover features award replays for spelling the name and beating previous high score.

Notes: This Deluxe model gives replays and number Match. The novelty play model is Williams' 1961 'Batting Champ' and has no Match feature.

An unexplained variation of the backglass is pictured in GameRoom Magazine Vol 10 No. 6, March 1994, page 9. The picture is low resolution black-and-white, but its Canadian owner explained there were definite silkscreening differences, most notably that there are only six bats, not seven, lying on the ground as well as the lack of a shadow cast by the outfielder at top right. The backglass as pictured was not installed in a machine and the owner did not explain how he obtained it or when. The backglass, which does indicate 'Deluxe', is branded with the manufacturer’s name which we would not expect if copies of the glass were commissioned by arcades where rows of the same baseball game might be on location.

If anyone knows anything about this "6-bat" glass or can photograph one, please contact us.

Notes: Fred Young did voice characterizations on this game.

Pictured in this listing is a game with serial number 57648 (falling numerically towards the end of production) and having playfield plastics representing a "6-layer tree" located in the middle of the circular Windcoaster ramp in the upper playfield. Reportedly, most of the games in this production run have only a "2-layer tree". We asked designer Tim Seckel about this and the circular ramp itself. He replies:

The original games (I don't recall when it was changed) had a full 6-layer tree as shown in the photos. The tree cast a pretty big shadow on the playfield, so we added two lamps there to help provide light under the tree. So it was generally a dark area that needed some extra light. From what I recall, either from beta testing or player feedback, was that the tree blocked too much of the action in the pop bumpers and top lanes. FYI - regarding the top lanes, the mirrored backglass has three lit inserts that show which lanes are lit since it was difficult to see the lights up there. So at some point we eliminated 4 layers of the tree, which was unfortunate from a aesthetic point of view, but definitely made an improvement in seeing the ball up there.

And, yes! the big round ramp is representing Neverland where the Lost Boys would ride these 'sail boards' all around the trees, and Peter would fly, etc.

Also pictured in this listing is an unadorned metal bracket on the playfield that seems to serve no purpose other than to take up space. Seckel agrees:

It was added to prevent a ball from getting wedged between the wire ramps and under the plastic "wind coaster" ramp. Now, what I don't remember is why there was a hole on the top... whether we added it "just in case" we needed to add a piece of plastic on top, or whether we 're-used' an existing bracket that just happened to be the right size and worked (maybe using up existing stock of something?)... that part I don't recall. But I can confirm it's there to prevent a ball from getting wedged there.

Seckel also stated that 'Hook' started out as 'Universal Studios Theme Park':

A game that was only in drawing/concept/ideation stage. It never made it very far. Hook opportunity came up and it quickly took on that name and game development.

Included in this listing is a prototype game with a polarizing spinning disk behind the backglass meant to provide a visual effect to the Tinker Bell hologram affixed to the backglass. Tim Seckel states the hologram was handmade and guesses that between 25 and 100 games were made with this spinning disk effect. A link in this listing provides a video of this effect. The prototype game shown here has serial number 48243 and was built for export to Belgium. Its prototype ROMs have an original label with date 11/11/1991 and are described as being basically the same as the final production version except some sound effects are missing.

We previously listed the Manufacture Date as May-3-1992.

Manufacturer: Manufacturas Automaticas Americanas, of Barcelona,
Spain
[Trade Name: MAM]
Type: Electro-mechanical (EM) [?]
Serial Number Database:View at The Internet Pinball Serial Number Database (IPSND.net)  (External site)
Notable Features: Flippers (4), Pop bumpers (3), Standup targets (5), Kick-out hole (1). 2-ball multiball. Asymmetrical playfield. The four flippers are very close together, two above two. Automatic ball serve. Cabinet has a rectangular backbox. The side rails, lockdown bar, and legs are metal. Backglass marquee.
Notes: This is a replay game with match feature. The backglass depicts a woman in a miniskirt trenchcoat. Four digit scoring but the thousands digit might be a fixed '1'. If we translated the Spanish flyer correctly, the playfield is described as polyester (Spanish: Tablero Poliester duración ilimitada). The cabinet art is identical to MAM's 1966 'Basket Ball'.

From looking at the flyer, we don't know if there are ball kickers between the outlanes and the flippers or if they themselves are outlanes. Additionally, while the center playfield appears to show a ball resting in a kick-out hole, there may be another kick-out hole in the upper left playfield, in the shadows on the flyer to the left of the three red standup targets.

The drop target blocks access to a VUK which kicks the ball to the elevated Battlefield mini-playfield. Electric plunger with gun-shaped shooter handle.
