Manufacturer: Stern Electronics, Incorporated, of Chicago, Illinois,
USA
(1977-1984) [Trade Name: Stern]
Project Date: 1982
MPU: Stern M-200 MPU
Type: Solid State Electronic (SS) [?]
Production: Never Produced
Theme: Fantasy
Specialty: Widebody [?]
Notable Features: Flippers (4), Pop bumpers (2), Slingshots (3), Standup targets (12), Kick-out holes (3), 4-bank drop targets (1), Spinning target (1), Star rollovers (2), Rollunder (1), Dual inlanes. 2, 3, or 4 ball multiball.
Design by: Joe Joos Jr.
Notes: Pictured in this listing is a widebody multiball whitewood which apparently was fully functional at one time.

The backglass name looks like one word 'LazerLord" while the copyright notice on the backglass lower left corner shows it as two words, 'Lazer Lord'. Underneath the apron, the name is handwritten as two words along with showing there the handwritten name of the designer.

The simple cabinet art and colors are the same as that of Stern's 1981 'Viper', also a widebody and multiball. The cabinet is stamped with serial number 50294. The coin door and backbox insert are each tagged with the name 'Viper' and the operator options in the backbox are labeled for 'Viper'. However, the playfield design is different than the 'Viper' game. The ROMs are labeled 6-8-82.

This 1982 widebody never went into production. The last production game made by Stern Electronics, Inc. was Stern's 1982 'Orbitor 1'. In 1984, Stern Electronics, Inc. tried to re-enter pinball machine manufacturing and produced a narrow body prototype called 'Lazer Lord' but with a different playfield design than the 1982 whitewood. It did not go into production. For a lengthy description of how that game came about, see Stern's 1984 'Lazer Lord'.

Design by: Joe Joos Jr.
Notes: The backglass name looks like one word 'LazerLord" while the copyright notice on the backglass lower left corner shows it as two words, 'Lazer Lord', as does its Instruction Card.

The designer's name is shown on the playfield between the flippers.

Same playfield layout as Stern's 1980 'Quicksilver' but with different artwork and, reportedly, has subtle differences in some angles of the playfield components.

This 1984 'Lazer Lord' was a prototype narrow-body machine and never went into production. Stern's 1982 'Orbitor 1' was the last production pinball machine manufactured by Stern Electronics, Incorporated.

We distinguish this 1984 narrow body prototype game from the 1982 widebody whitewood having the same name but with a different playfield design, see Stern's 1982 'Lazer Lord'.

In 2017, Duncan Brown had provided his knowledge and research to explain these two different and obscure games having the same name:

It's pretty clear that in 1982, while they were trying (and failing) to sell many Iron Maidens or Orbitor 1s, Stern was working on their next game, LazerLord. They were building up a whitewood in a leftover Viper cabinet (a completely normal series of events), and had already gotten sample backglasses produced.

In the November 1982 Replay Magazine, on page 37, is an article headlined "Stern Shuttles To The Suburbs" detailing how they were selling their Diversey Pkwy building, and had consolidated all operations in their URL subsidiary's building in Elk Grove. It includes a line that starts "Stern has ceased all pinball manufacturing..." I believe that's just when they made it official, by not setting up a pinball production line in Elk Grove, but the decision had been made months earlier... thus the last date of June on the whitewood's ROM labels.

I don't have at hand my late-1984 Replay Magazines, but in early 1984 they were clearly on the downswing, with their VP resigning in April, and a May story detailing the sale of the Seeburg assets in March. In the March 1985 issue on page 18 is an article titled "Stern Liquidates, But Gary Stern Opens Carrin Electronics".

Stern absolutely showed a game called "LazerLord" at a trade show. That was the reason for the existence of the flyer (shown in this listing). The flyer uses the tagline "Pinball Is Back!!!" and has their Elk Grove Village address, along with a crappy photo that clearly matches the complete-with-artwork narrow body version of the game. While I don't have the issue of Replay with a report on the fall 1984 trade show to prove it, I think it's pretty obvious from the clues that's when it was.

So the theory that, in a desperate move as the company was faltering, Stern tried to release a pinball using existing parts (their stash of LazerLord glasses, and the already-engineered Quicksilver design), would seem to be correct.

So this explains the two dates, 1982 and 1984, and the two different games with the same name.

1982 is when they were developing the [whitewood] game, and probably would have released it later that year if they hadn't exited the pinball business.

1984 is when they tried to sell a [narrow body] game by re-using existing parts, but a game that required no engineering, because they had no pinball designers on staff by that point.

They are two totally different games. The 1982 whitewood was the original LazerLord idea by Joe Joos, the 1984 game is just a reused game design, with the LazerLord art package applied to it.

Anyone who has ready access to late-1984 Replay or PlayMeter Magazines, who can nail down that last little bit of proof on this? I'll eventually find it if nobody else does, but my copies of those magazines are in storage elsewhere at the moment.

Date Of Manufacture: June, 1996
MPU: Sega/Stern Whitestar
Type: Solid State Electronic (SS) [?]
Production: 1 unit   (confirmed)
Serial Number Database:View at The Internet Pinball Serial Number Database (IPSND.net)  (External site)
Theme: Viper Driving
Notable Features: Flippers (2), Pop bumpers (3), Shaker motor (2), Timed multiball (4), Speech.

The main objective is to achieve multiball by changing the stoplight from green to yellow to red. The stoplight is changed via ramp shots or by hitting the upper playfield targets. The shaker motors operate during multiball. By hitting the stick shift you increase from 1st gear to 6th gear (one gear for each hit). In addition to getting points for this, there are Jackpots for all 6 gears. The game software was based on Sega's 1996 'Twister'.

Cabinet measures 48 3/4 inches long, 20 1/2 inches wide, and 72 1/2 inches high.

Toys: Miniature Viper car with working headlights, Stick shift.

Sound by: Brian Schmidt
Software by: Orin Day
Notes: Artist Marc Raneses told us that this game was around the time he left Sega Pinball so he didn’t remember doing too much on it. He believes he did "a few dots" but thinks Kurt Andersen probably did the majority of the dot/animation.

Mini-Viper was an experiment to have a modern game in a 1950's size of cabinet, created in response to operator complaints that pinball machines were too large for the smaller game nooks of some locations, where a video game would be a more sensible fit. However, this prototype game, brought to an AMOA show, was not well received for its smaller size, and never went into production.

Instead, a full-size game was made, Sega's 1998 'Viper Night Drivin''.

The prototype was obtained from Sega missing the playfield gear shift knob, the Viper toy car, the specially-sized lockdown bar, and the translite. These items were faithfully reproduced in the pictures shown here.

This is a 3-ball multi-ball game, with the balls being stored in the lane located on the upper right-hand side of the playfield.

There is a round turret located in the center of the playfield. Normally stationary, the turret begins to revolve when a ball enters it. The red flipper buttons are used to aim and launch the ball out of the turret in any direction and back onto the playfield. The turret also has 7 stand-up targets that can be hit while in motion.
